COMMENTARY

Source of Worry
Now is not the time to engage in debates about Democrats versus Republicans or liberals versus conservatives. Instead, we must concentrate on the critical issue of democracy versus autocracy.
Our nation is now experiencing significant turmoil. The separation of powers is at stake. Our president is systematically dismantling various government departments, elevating our nation to the status of a global adversary through arbitrary tariff increases. He is randomly deporting individuals without providing due process and offering forgiveness to those who have attempted to overthrow our democratic system.
Furthermore, he has, at times, seemingly defended our enemies, such as Russian President Vladimir Putin.
These pressing matters should be our foremost concern now.

Toni Morrison Awards for Courage were presented at the conclusion of the program hosted by The New Republic, a media organization founded in 1914 that focuses on national politics, news, culture and the arts. The celebration was immensely engaging and inspirational. It included a panel of authors of banned books and another with leaders of prominent professional organization such as Pen America.
The Toni Morrison Awards for Courage were presented to individuals and to “The FREADOM Coalition” which was forrmed a year ago as Florida embarked on its “culture wars” and hundreds of books were banned in Florida schools. The teaching of African American history also became embroiled in controversy as school curriculum was rewritten.
Cuban American Women Supporting Democracy (CAWSD) is one of the grass-root organizations in The FREADOM Coalition and Esther De Varona, point person for the CAWSD School Board Project initiative, accepted the award.
